2022 CID Award Winner Spotlight: Commercial Tile Design – Hospitality and Commercial Tile Design – Multi-Family Winners

Over the next few months, we’ll be highlighting the projects that received a coveted 2022 Coverings Installation & Design (CID) Award. The CID Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in the design and installation of tile & stone in both residential and commercial projects. Projects were evaluated on their execution, original usage, and overall design and purpose by a panel of industry experts, prominent editors, and leading designers. Check the Coverings blog each week to learn about the 2022 winners and their imaginative and impeccable applications of tile & stone.

This week we’re putting the spotlight on the Commercial Tile Design – Hospitality and Commercial Tile Design – Multi-Family winners.

Commercial Tile Design – Hospitality
Beachcombers Restaurant & Wet Whistle Poolside Bar
LHK design
Myrtle Beach, SC

The proposed interior design of the Beachcombers Restaurant and Wet Whistle poolside bar at the Hilton Myrtle Beach blurs the boundaries between indoors and out as the lobby space extends out to the new restaurant lounge space and then out to the pool and pool bar on the deck.

The wood look tile floor in various angles and inset black and white distressed finish tile chess board at the upper-level lounge area conjure nostalgia of the historic Myrtle Beach boardwalk at the pavilion.

Wood screen dividers play with light and shadow as the sun moves throughout the day across the casual outdoor seating areas. Ombre mosaic tile at the curved poolside bar counter takes us from a glistening blue ocean up to a cool white sky. Patterns, textures, and colors of materials mimic reflections on the ocean waves, with a recurrent ocean blue accent on a neutral palette that draws inspiration from timeworn wood.

All materials were selected to ensure durability and longevity against the harsh beach front winds, salt and humid air, and pool water chlorine, as well as to create a casual and comfortable guest experience.

Commercial Tile Design – Multi-Family
SOLAIA Condos
Doni Douglas + Skyline Development Group

Natural materials were leveraged in warm tones to achieve a classic wellness aesthetic and overall sense of relaxation and calm in SOLAIA, a luxury condo building on the shores of the Hudson River.

The building’s name, inspired by Italy’s Umbrian landscape and sun-inspired color story, drove the design direction and interior finishes complement the amazing NYC skyline view.

On the lobby floor, suspended slabs of Italian Castellavazzo rock in resin were installed. A custom ombre marble mosaic is showcased in the experience shower. Italian porcelain large format wall slabs are featured throughout the spa in Onice Persia. Pebbled porcelain and mosaics line the halo therapy salt room. A nero fluted marble mosaic lines an arched opening in the lounge. Porcelain inlaid with brass welcomes lobby guests.

The unprecedented design for the three-tiered Wellness Center and Spa is an incredible two-story experience. Each floor of wellness has its own design personality and yet all still flow seamlessly together to create a feeling of luxury and escape.

Fresh materials for this project included metallic-brushed ceramic and reclaimed teak on tile mesh in geometric patterns to create a soothing yet stunning sanctuary.
