2024 Special Recognition CID Award Winner Spotlight: Masjid Putra Mosque

Masjid Putra Mosque 3

At Coverings 2024, we honored 21 outstanding projects that demonstrated spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in the use of tile and stone. This week we’re spotlighting the 2024 Special Recognition CID Award winner for Special Recognition: International.

Project: Masjid Putra Mosque
Installer: LATICRETE
Location: Putrajaya, Malaysia

Masjid Putra, named after Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, is the main mosque in Putrajaya and a standout landmark. Completed in 1999, it blends Persian Islamic and Safavid styles, overlooking a serene man-made lake amidst Putrajaya’s modern architecture. Over time, wear and tear affected the mosque, with domes losing mosaics and rainwater seeping in. Despite facing challenges, including navigating COVID-19 restrictions, a comprehensive 2-year renovation project restored its iconic pink granite structure and domes.

Led by the Malaysian Public Works Department using the LATICRETE® system, the project refurbished all 9 domes, incorporating custom mosaic printing and managing public access during work. Scaffolding around the 50m high main dome was meticulously planned to accommodate ongoing mosque use.

Challenges with the domes’ fiber-reinforced panels required innovative solutions to maintain structural integrity, opting for mortar resurfacing to manage weight. Despite obstacles, the project successfully preserved the mosque’s cultural and architectural significance, setting a new standard for future refurbishments in Malaysia.
