At Coverings 2024, we honored 21 outstanding projects that demonstrated spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in the use of tile and stone. This week we’re spotlighting the 2024 Special Recognition CID Award winner for Special Recognition: Women in Tile.

Project: Nourish by Dyani White Hawk in collaboration with Mercury Mosaics for The Whitney Museum of American Art
Designer: Mercury Mosaics
Location: New York City, New York, USA

“Nourish” by Dyani White Hawk in collaboration with Mercury Mosaics is a stunning mosaic art installation, created by an acclaimed artist and a top ceramic tile maker. This 30-foot masterpiece will be the centerpiece of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 8th Floor Cafe, opening in 2024. Made with 40% recycled materials, it highlights a strong commitment to sustainability.

The project involved turning intricate designs into handcrafted tiles, each one becoming a unique piece of the larger mosaic. Innovative techniques were used, including upcycled materials and an industrial waterjet to create beadwork-like tiles. This marks the artist’s first venture into ceramic tile art, blending traditional indigenous art with a modern twist.

The installation process, managed by experts in New York and Minnesota, required exceptional skill to ensure every piece matched the artist’s vision perfectly. The complex assembly process demanded meticulous attention to detail, reflecting themes of interconnectedness between earth and sky.

The project also involved close collaboration with the architectural firm overseeing the cafe’s design to ensure seamless integration of the mosaic into the space. “Nourish” is more than just an art piece; it’s a showcase of artistic innovation, craftsmanship, and environmental care, connecting histories, cultures, and the environment in a captivating way.
