At Coverings 2024, we honored 21 outstanding projects that demonstrated spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in the use of tile and stone. This week we’re spotlighting the 2024 CID Award winner for Residential Ceramic Tile Design: Bath.
Project: Modern Take on Classic Black & White
Designer: Tbektu Design
Location: Columbia, Tennessee, USA
DESIGN CHALLENGES:
-
The footprint could not change and 5.25 sq/ft of space was getting lost to accommodate new exterior pocket doors in a room that shares a wall with the bathroom
-
Aging in place — long-term accessibility to the toilet and steam/shower was important
-
The husband is 6’ 6” tall, so bench heights, shower head location, and toilet height needed special consideration
-
Needed adequate ventilation for steam shower and proper sloping of floor and ceiling for water run-off and drainage
-
Open shelves, closets, cabinets provided “jumbled” storage—clients wanted sleeker, more functional storage
DESIGN SOLUTIONS:
-
Re-construction of floor joists lowered the shower floor for a curb-free shower with linear drain
-
Walls in shower and around toilet were reinforced to receive grab bars at a later date
-
Fixtures, robe hooks and benches were placed at heights to accommodate both tall and shorter frames
-
Ceiling was removed so that architectural-grade 3” flangeless recessed LEDs could be installed
-
Shower ceiling was properly sloped for steam run-off
-
Vent/lights inside the shower and a high-performance vent just outside the shower quickly remove steam/moisture
-
Wall sconces light the face, recessed slot apertures illuminate the sinks and tall mirrors amplified natural and decorative light
-
Docking station drawers and pop-up outlet/USB receptacles de-clutter countertops
