At Coverings 2024, we honored 21 outstanding projects that demonstrated spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in the use of tile and stone. This week we’re spotlighting the 2024 CID Award winner for Residential Ceramic Tile Design: Kitchen.
Project: Smart Kitchen
Designer: Moderno Porcelain Works Phoenix
Location: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
For this project, the focus was on maximizing space efficiency in a small kitchen while maintaining a sleek and visually appealing design. The design featured the implementation of Neolith NAUTILO Sintered Stone series, specifically utilizing tile sizes of 63”x126” in two distinct colors: CRISTALLO for the island and WHITE PATAGONIA for the perimeter run.
The surfacing selection was a deliberate choice to address the customer’s need for a durable, stain-resistant material capable of accommodating an Invisible Cook Top system. To infuse drama and depth into the design, three strategically placed waterfall legs were incorporated, enhancing the visual impact of the kitchen space.
The installation for the dry bar in the “smart kitchen” of the customer’s home features an innovative choice of large format porcelain—specifically, a wood-looking Sintered Stone. The selected material offers a perfect blend of modern aesthetics and timeless appeal, providing the durability needed for a high-traffic area like the entertainment zone. It’s wood-like appearance adds warmth and a touch of classic elegance to the space.
To enhance the visual impact and create a focal point within the dry bar, a striking design element was incorporated—a single waterfall leg, which adds drama and serves a functional purpose, offering a stunning view from the exterior living space and pool area.
It’s important to note that this installation was crafted in close collaboration with the homeowner, who is a designer themselves. The design was meticulously tailored to meet the specific needs of their family while also aligning with their aesthetic preferences.
