At Coverings 2023, the CID Awards honored outstanding Special Recognition projects demonstrating spectacular craftsmanship and creativity in using tile & stone. This week, we’re recognizing a stunning ceramic art installation.
This mural was fabricated over the course of 6 months and is permanently installed at Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport. Conceptualized by artist Mariam Ghani, this mural is a data visualization of all the languages and cultures within the five New York City boroughs and the Tri-state area. There are over 1,200 circles, and each one is embossed with an endonym, a name that a group of people use to refer to themselves or their language. The circles were made in 5 different sizes to indicate population sizes and are in different colors, representing the region the group originated from. Stainless steel “flight paths” are incorporated into the mural to illustrate some places of origin for immigrant communities. Delta Airlines built and ran Terminal C, and they appreciated that the mosaics used were fabricated in Queens, which is the borough where LaGuardia is located!
